Curriculum Intent Statement – Science

Intent

At Eastbury Community School Primary, we recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life and is one of the main core subjects in primary school. Science is a body of knowledge built up through experimental testing of ideas. It can be one of the most exciting and practical subjects and, as a result, is a real joy for teachers and pupils. Children love the chance to learn through being totally hands-on and finding things out for themselves — the perfect way to understand the world around them. Science in our school is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live through investigation and exploration.  Furthermore, at ECS, it is about finding reliable answers to questions we may ask about the world around us in a practical way. 

Our intention in Science at ECS is to encourage curiosity in our pupils so that they ask questions that lead onto outstanding explorations and investigations about the universe.  The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and National Curriculum provides a structure and skills development for the Science curriculum being taught throughout our school, which is linked, where possible to the theme/topic to provide a creative scheme of work, which reflects a balanced programme of study. 

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In the EYFS, science is included within ‘Understanding the World’. In Nursery and Reception, pupils will mainly learn about Science through their play – for example, which objects float and sink during water play. Our pupils will develop important skills such as observation, prediction and critical thinking through our high quality activities in the Early Years. 

Key Stage 1 (Y1 & Y2) and Key Stage 2 (Y3, Y4, Y5, Y6)

In line with the Science Programmes of Study KS1 and KS2, we aim to ensure that all pupils at Eastbury Community Primary School:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge they require to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Scientific Enquiry Skills - Science Superhero Squad

In conjunction with the aims of the National Curriculum, we aim to develop the essential scientific enquiry skills to deepen their scientific knowledge through our ‘Science Superhero Squad’. 

  1. Observing Over Time
  2. Comparative and Fair Testing
  3. Identifying, Classifying and Grouping
  4. Pattern Seeking
  5. Researching Using Secondary Sources  

Implementation

Class Teachers at ECS create a positive attitude to Science learning within their classrooms and reinforce an expectation that all children are capable of achieving high standards. During the teaching of Science, an importance is placed on the teaching of scientific skills (Science Superhero Squad). Science is taught using a topic based approach allowing pupils to gain a real depth of learning over the course of a half term and fully immerse themselves in a topic before moving on. In lessons, Class Teachers demonstrate how to use scientific equipment to embed scientific teaching. Pupils are given opportunities to develop their understanding by accessing outdoor learning, workshops and trips. 

Impact

At ECS, our aim to ensure children are equipped with skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world. Through various class trips, workshops and interactions with experts, children have the understanding that Science has changed our lives and that it is vital to the world’s future prosperity.
